In January 2026, Tim Riley (University of Aberdeen) and Liesl Rowe (Leeds Beckett University) presented a closed webinar on the ongoing problem of copyright trolling to the copyright literacy community. One common sentiment which emerged from the webinar was that there is a lot of uncertainty around the scale of copyright trolling and how the sector generally chooses to handle these requests. To build up a more accurate picture, Tim and Liesl ran a survey. 36 organisations responded, both from within the UK and internationally. You can read the report here:
The consistent thread throughout the report is that copyright trolling is a common issue and there is a general lack of clarity about how to handle these requests. Talking about these issues helps us all as a sector refine our views and raise awareness.
