On Friday 8 May 2026 we are holding a closed webinar on copyright exceptions in UK higher education as they relate to the use of Generative AI tools. The event will be starting a little earlier than our usual webinars at 10.30am, and will run until 12pm.
The session features presentations from Lisa Bird from the University of Birmingham and Kate Vasili, Middlesex University and Chair of the UUK / Guild HE Copyright Negotiation and Advisory Committee. We will discuss a range of scenarios based on reported uses of Generative AI in higher education with various types of copyright protected content such as journal articles and books We will ask a number of questions including :
- What copyright exceptions might apply in each given scenario?
- How can we make use of exceptions to help deal with issues relating to restrictive AI clauses in e-resources licences?
- What sort of guidance should we be offering to staff and students in higher education?
We will be asking participants to contribute via breakout rooms and live questionnaires to build a picture of the current situation and consider next steps.
To register for the webinar please use the following form. Please note this is a closed event restricted to those working in the higher education sector.
