If you couldn’t make it to Icepops this summer, then our next webinar on Friday, November 22nd, 2024 is an opportunity to catch up on some of the highlights of the mini conference. Also just in case you didn’t realise we do have the presentations up on the website, including slides from our keynote Kyle K Courtney.

The team behind the game Open Access Alchemy (Liesl Rowe, Thali Bento, Anna Gower, Elise Lagden, Andre Buller) will be updating us on how to unleash the magic of publisher & HE collaboration through gameplay.
Liesl says, “Open Access Alchemy is a card game designed collaboratively by librarians from Leeds Beckett University and licensing experts from Springer Nature. It aims to teach academics about the different open access licensing options in an hour session themed around rival wizards publishing their arcane research. We will discuss the evolution of the game, how it has transformed thanks to playtest feedback and our current next steps for making the game more widely available.”
Christine Daoutis from UCL will be discussing Copyright for Humans. This is a card game where players discuss common copyright scenarios encountered by academic lecturers, students, researchers and librarians, drawing responses from a selection of possible answers. The game aims to spark discussion around grey areas, highlight nuance and uncertainty, and address copyright anxiety. Christine will outline the latest version of the game and discuss possible improvements and applications.
Mayya Revzina of the World Bank asks the burning questions: Is copyright the most boring subject in the world? Or is copyright the most fascinating subject? She’s heard both opinions. And the Copyright Coffee Series at the World Bank are a bridge from the boring to the fascinating camp. What is the secret tool to encourage her colleagues to cross it? Making educational sessions fun! From “horror stories” to success stories, speaking about the history of copyright or day-to-day practice in the Open Access environment, they aim for a happy ending.
And finally Michael Duncan from the University of Dundee will be re-running his lightning talk “Copyright Beyond the Classroom: a real-life experience of publishing art school dissertations (full of third-party images and at the last minute!) Earlier this year, Michael Duncan and Kirsty Knowles from the University of Dundee embarked on their Library’s first in-house publishing project with undergraduate dissertations from the Art School. After an enthusiastic start, the duo soon ran into a copyright quagmire that jeopardised the whole project. In this talk, Michael will recap their experience and fill you in on the steps they have taken since then – some of which were inspired by what they learned at this year’s Icepops conference!
The webinar will be at the usual time of 11.00am, and you can join using the Blackboard Collaborate link. As ever, a recording will be available afterwards on the ALT YouTube channel.
