Chris writes: We are very pleased to announce the launch of a collaborative research project with Amanda Wakaruk and Céline Gareau-Brennan from the University of Alberta. We featured a post on Amanda and Celine’s original study on copyright anxiety back in 2021 and we can now reveal that we are joining forces to determine whether copyright anxiety is an issue in the UK and Canadian higher education sectors. Here’s the official blurb:

The Copyright Anxiety Study is a collaboration between the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, City, University of London and the University of Alberta. The research project will be taking place from spring 2023 until early 2024.

If you are a professional in the UK higher education sector we would like to invite you to complete a survey into levels of copyright anxiety which will be open until 18 August 2023. Canadian higher education professionals can complete the Canadian survey (also in French) or express an interest in taking part in one of the Canadian focus groups.

The aim of this project is to explore levels of copyright anxiety across the UK and Canadian higher education sector, and determine the extent to which copyright law ‘chills’ innovative research and teaching practice. The research will compare UK responses with those in Canada to investigate the extent to which legal and cultural differences impact on copyright anxiety as a phenomenon.

There is more information about the project aims on the copyrightliteracy.org website. Please contact chris.morrison@bodleian.ox.ac.uk  if you have any questions about the research.
