On Friday 13th June from 3-4pm we will be hosting a webinar to present findings from a recent research project undertaken by Chris Morrison (Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford), Jane Secker (City St George’s, University of London) and Amanda Wakaruk (University of Alberta). Our study built on Amanda’s earlier research she conducted in 2020 with Céline Gareau-Brennan to develop and test out a Copyright Anxiety Scale (CAS). This work was published in the Journal of Copyright in Education and Librarianship in 2021.

Our follow up study was based on a survey of over 500 professionals workings in higher education in Canada and the UK and six focus groups with staff. We were interested in discovering more about why copyright anxiety exists, how it manifests itself (or is experienced by professionals) and the impact that it has on the university sector. We were also interested in understanding the differences between experiences in Canada, where there has been recent litigation impacting on the university sector, and the UK where there has not.

Our key aim is to try and discover what we can do to mitigate for copyright anxiety as our findings suggest that it’s having a negative impact on the teaching and learning activities of universities, stifling creative research projects and hampering the services that libraries can offer. We also wanted to investigate copyright ‘chill’ which is where universities act more cautiously than the law permits, due to a fear of copyright infringement cases.

Join us for this exciting and lively discussion about a fascinating topic, and please note this webinar takes place at a later time to our usual schedule, to accommodate the time difference in Canada.

Registration for this event is required, and it will be hosted by the ALT L SIG on Zoom but is open to all. We hope to see you there please do book your place!
