Join us on Friday 25th April 2025 at 11.00 for the latest in our ongoing series of webinars on becoming a copyright expert. We are pleased to be joined by two experts and one enthusiastic amateur this time around.
Copyright specialists vary. Some are born and some are made. Some were lured into copyright and some were ‘volunteered’ to take on the role. Regardless of how we came to be here, we all have something in common: at the very least an interest in copyright and in many cases, a genuine love for the subject.
But how do you become a copyright specialist? In this joint presentation, Irene Barranco Garcia and Christine Daoutis compare notes, exchange tips and share anecdotes, drawing from their respective copyright journeys.

Irene Barranco Garcia studied Library and Information Science at the University of Alcala de Henares in Madrid, the city where she was born. Irene moved to London in 2022 where she has lived since and always worked in libraries. Irene is a chartered librarian with sixteen years of experience working in the Higher Education sector. She recently joined Imperial College as their Copyright and Scholarly Communications Librarian, having previously worked at the University of Greenwich as Collaboration, Compliance, and Copyright Manager.

Christine Daoutis studied Biology in Athens and did her PhD in Psychology at the University of Surrey. She spent a few years doing postdoctoral research before discovering the wonderful world of open access. Open access came first, but the interest in copyright followed shortly after. She worked for about 20 years in various open access roles at Surrey before moving to UCL in 2022 to focus on copyright.

And what if you’re not a copyright specialist? Kathryn Drumm will be talking about why she ISN’T a copyright expert and why that’s OK. Kathryn works as an educational technologist at City St George’s, University of London. Before moving into higher educational, she worked in broadcasting for almost 20 years. After completing a masters in Information Science, she joined the library at City St George’s, for part of that time in the copyright team, and eventually made the move into educational technology. She will talk about her copyright journey, and why a little knowledge doesn’t have to be a dangerous thing. When she’s not trying to ignore copyright, Kathryn is a part-time copyright Padawan and quiz-setter for CoOLSIG.
